Jen (Sarah Prikryl) and Mitch (Craig Welzbacher) are newlyweds, just settling into their romantic dream home. Along with Mitch’s best friend Danny, that is. Danny lives with the couple, both because this beautiful home is a bit rich for Mitch until his medical practice picks up after his internship, and Danny is a bit of an oafish loser. Danny’s luck is about to change, though, now that he’s discovered Internet dating.
Blair (Mayra Leal) is Danny’s new girlfriend, and she’s hot, hot, hot… and apparently completely into Danny. Of course, she also steals glances at Mitch and makes sure he’s in the vicinity to catch her when she’s sharing her amazing body with goofball Danny. Blair has her sights set on elevating her station in life you see, and a young doctor with a lovely upscale home is just the ticket. The wife and best friend are merely an inconvenience, and she will stop at nothing to achieve her goal.

Playing House is a kind of cross between Single White Female and The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, sans infant. Blair is an extremely sexy and deadly villain, and what makes her scary is how normal she seems in her deviousness… We’ve all seen films, and possibly real life, when somebody had designs on a person, a possession, a promotion at work, whatever. There are some folks who are just conniving schemers, and Blair shows herself as such right from the beginning. Things get more and more intense as it becomes clear just how far she will go to get what she’s after.

The strength of Playing House is in the performances, Mayra Leal as Blair and Sarah Prikryl as Jen particularly. These women both make the film work very well, playing through the emotions necessary for both a scheming temptress and an insecure new wife. The film is also wrought with frustrating moments, those where you know that husband Mitch is making a very bad choice. At times it’s bad moral choices as he spies on his friend schtupping Blair in the pool or stealing glances at her in scanty panties, or deadly choices in allowing himself to be alone with this crazy psychopath.
The Playing House story has been told
before, and in just
about every case there wouldn’t have been nearly as much trouble if men
were not such cads. Is it really that easy for an attractive woman to
create a few conflicts and swoop in for the score with weak-principled
men falling for it at every turn? Are all men actually thinking with
the little guy all the time in spite of what they have to lose? I don’t
think so, but it is clear that films like Playing House
dramatize exactly what can happen to the life of a straying husband.
The moral of the story is keep the blue steel in your pants guys, and never ever let your video game buddies hot girlfriend make you breakfast while wearing ruffled underwear. Those are definitely words to live by.
