Masters of Horror Season 2, Episode 9:
Right to Die

The Second Season of the Masters of Horror series on Showtime combines top horror writers and directors together for a second year creating some incredible (and some not so incredible) one-hour features. Right to Die looks at the decisions we make for those that can't make them for themselves.

Masters of Horror Season 2 Episode 9: Right to Die
Original air date: January 5, 2007
Directed by: Rob Schmidt
Written by: John Esposito

Starring:
Martin Donovan
as Cliff
Julia Anderson as Abby
Corbin Bernsen as Ira
Robin Sydney as Trish

Synopsis: Cliff (Martin Donovan) and Abby (Julia Anderson) are driving along the road talking when a fallen tree jumps out in front of them and they have a wreck. Cliff gets out, only to find that Abby has been thrown out of the car and is in need of an ambulance. The problem is that gas has been leaking onto Abby and a fire ignites, burning Abby beyond recognition. Abby survives but is barely hanging on to life. Because of this, Cliff seeks the right to have a “Do Not Resuscitate” order filed so Abby can have the Right to Die and die in peace. Abby on the other hand, does not want to die and is using every means necessary to make Cliff aware of it.

Thoughts: I will have to admit that I was surprised to see Rob Schmidt labeled as a Master of Horror. He only had one entry into the genre, Wrong Turn, and although not bad, it did not meet “Master” quality. Right to Die gives us a little taste of what to expect in the future form Schmidt. It is one of the better episodes of the second season of Masters of Horror and you can see some growth in Schmidt’s directing ability. Right to Die has a great concept, a good story, and an even better twist of an ending. I am looking forward to seeing what else Rob Schmidt has to offer to the horror genre.
