A young girls hair is being carefully brushed by her mother in the beginning moments of Rite. The girl is dressed all in white and is preparing for a special day. She emerges from her bedroom and it seems the entire extended family is there, anxiously awaiting her arrival. Aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents… the entire clan is gathered and the cook is in the kitchen preparing a special feast.
Outside the yard has been transformed by rows of chairs, flowers, ribbons and a small stage into the grand scene of an important and exciting event.
The young lady’s life is changing forever from that of a girl to woman. Thegirl, however, is not quite sure. While poised and calm outwardly she is also in a state of surreal perception, not actually hearing what well-wishers are saying or perceiving her surroundings but rather experiencing a hazy blur of happenings and activity.
Suddenly the big moment has arrived, and the revelers gather in the yard and take their seats. A priest is preceding and flower girls tend to the every need of the guest of honor. But what is the nature of this particular ritual? Will this be the most special day of a young girl’s life, or the most terrifying?
Rite is a powerful and shocking short horror film that accomplishes an amazing level of storytelling in a surprisingly short time. Through a clear screenplay, excellent pacing and superb acting the nature of the event, the importance of the girl’s coming out and the sheer terror felt by the youngster are all effectively related in
a few short minutes.
The cinematography and sound in this short horror film are as good as any big-studio production, and the captivating tale and compelling performances drive a need to know more – who are these people with such family rituals? Where do they come from, where do they live… is there evil lurking under the surface of a clan that makes the macabre normal?
Kudos goes to Writer and Director Alicia Conway for the creation of this
horror short, a hugely powerful film in a compact little package. One hopesthat this film expands to feature length in the near future, and in the mean time this will serve as a perfect preamble to the main event at a horror movie night in your home. Just make sure that you choose an exceptional horror film as the headliner or Rite may just steal the show. Questions or comments about Rite? Discuss it on The Ossuary Forums!
