Ryan's Must See (No Pretention!)
by Ryan Harris
(California, USA)
In this list you will find some great movies that I know are a must see for Horror Buffs of all types. Included are my personal selections and why they made it on the list.
1. Pumpkinhead (1989)- The atmosphere and set design are the most memorable aspects of this film, with a superb graveyard set and a handful of shacks and houses that look just perfect and really help pull you into the movie. Watch with the lights low and get ready for a real low budget treat!
2. In the Mouth of Madness (1995)- Once again an atmospheric masterpiece and in my opinion John Carpenter's best film. Sam Neill does a great job as John Trent, an insurance investigator hired to find a missing writer. Good makeup effects and a soundtrack by Carpenter himself lend to a great spooky movie. Another low budget masterpiece!
3. The Dead Zone (1983)- Christopher Walken at his strangest. Great murder mystery thriller and character piece. It has all of the goodness a David Cronenberg can offer. A rainy day favorite.
4. Nightbreed (1990)- Clive Barker written and directed. For fans of monsters and mutants or someone who wants to watch a really fun movie. Don't take it seriously and you'll have a great time watching it.
5. From Beyond (1986)- Not a pure horror but more of a mad scientist mix of horror and Sci-fi makes for a really cool story. Great gore effects and awesome directing from Stuart Gordon make this a must see for anyone who enjoys a good mad scientist. Best ass-shot on film, period.
