I will start out with an opinion. You may agree with it or you may not. You may even go to ebay and try to track down an old copy of a movie as a result. Okay here goes…Scarecrows is F--king awesome!! That felt good to say. I'll even say it again…Scarecrows is F--king awesome! Whew…that felt good.
In the world of the crappy B-movies that I have shifted through, found in the musty corners of the mom and pop video stores, Scarecrows stands tall above the others. I have felt this way since the first time I found a copy, pretty hard to come by for some reason, many years ago. Why do I believe that Scarecrows is so incredible? I shall explain. First, though, I offer a bit of plot.
The tagline of Scarecrows announces that "Trespassers will be violated". That is just
beautiful. It may as well have said "In the cornfield, no one can hear you scream". This
sets the perfect tone for one of my all time favorite B-movies. Scarecrows revolves
around a group of ex-military criminals who have just robbed a military base of lots and lots
of money and are now on their way via airplane to a tropical paradise. They kidnapped the pilot
of the plane and his daughter to gain the transportation to their getaway to sandy beaches and exotic
women.
Somewhere over the great vast cornfields of the mid-west one of the men decides to screw over the others and take the money for himself - and jumps from the plane. He doesn't get very far though…it turns out that he landed in the wrong farm!
The farm/criminal landing pad seems abandoned, and is populated with strange looking scarecrows
everywhere. The rest of the criminal mob go looking for the deserter and stake out the abandoned
farmhouse hoping to trap him. We all soon realize that there is something seriously wrong with this
part of the country. This is when the real fun happens.
One by one the Scarecrows come alive and act out their own brand of "security" on all
involved in rather brutal ways. These are not your run off the mill cheesy Scarecrows either.
These things are monstrous! Fast moving, sneaky, loud, and very, very creepy, always waiting for the
right moment to strike and then striking with force! Whoever did the
effects for Scarecrows (J.B. Jones, also known for the effects in
Cape Fear,
The Crow and
Cocoon - The Return) did a great job! The scarecrows are very scary and very realistic.
There is lots of great gore, action and suspense in Scarecrows.
Scarecrows can be characterized as Aliens in Kansas. The acting is great for such a low budget movie, and everyone does a fine job. The atmosphere is above par in terms of creepiness. The setting is great – I have always thought that cornfields are scary for some reason…and even more so after watching Scarecrows. The entire movie takes place over one dark quiet night.
There is one element of Scarecrows that bothers me a bit – the scarecrows themselves are
never really explained. The history of the living scarecrows is vaguely delved into, but not to my satisfaction.
Still, I very much recommend Scarecrows to anyone looking for a great action/horror movie. It is a shame that Scarecrows has not gained more notice, and if you can find a copy, I say “grab it!” Happy Hunting! Questions or comments about Scarecrows? contact us!
