Shrooms is About a Bunch of Stupid Kids Taking Drugs and Behaving in Stupid Ways.

Shrooms is an interesting paradox. For all of the unbelieveability, ridiculousness and instances of sheer dumbness, you might really kinda like it.

Once upon a time a group of college-aged goof-balls decided to travel from the United States to Ireland for the sole purpose of foraging through the woods for psychedelic mushrooms, making tea out of them and tripping in the wilderness among wild animals and inbred mountain people.

One of the goof-balls, Tara (Lindsey Haun) was very sad. Although she told her goof-ball friends that her desire to experience the “nature trip” was her motivation for traveling across the world, she had another reason; she likes Jake (Jack Huston), the charming Irish man that they all met during a previous college voyage to the country. Unfortunately Jake doesn’t like Tara.

Stoner goof-ball Troy (Max Kasch) likes bud, and also likes Holly (Alice Greczyn)… and steals lustful glances at Lisa (Maya Hazen) whenever he can. This makes Holly sad. Troy doesn’t notice.

Bluto (Robert Hoffman) likes steroids, talking to cows and sticking his manhood through open car windows when the lights flash three times. Bluto also likes Lisa, along with every other member of the female persuasion he can get his hands on. Nobody (but Lisa) likes Bluto.

Shrooms (2008) When Bluto put his manhood into the open window for a happy ending, we all knew what would happenJakes tells the goof-balls a campfire story about a vicious killer that stalks unsuspecting lovelies in the woods. Amazingly, this very same vicious killer sets his sights on our American goof-balls and commences to slash, stab, impale and otherwise generally terrorize. Now everybody is sad.

There really isn’t anything to like very much about Shrooms. The story is silly, the acting is just passable, the monster is elusive, the inbred mountain people are weird and the “shocking twist ending” was telegraphed a mile away. Still, for some reason, I really kind of liked it.

Entertainment and escape are two viable reasons to watch, stick with and finish a horror movie. Shrooms gave me both of these things. It was actually pretty fun in a twisted sort of way. The people who “got it” all really sort of deserved it. Not REALLY deserved it like being evil or anything… but it seemed as if the instant someone did something stupid they were immediately rewarded by being killed in a painful and terrorizing way. I like that.

Shrooms (2008) The Freaky Eyes of Tara

I can say one thing for sure; I have every intention of watching Shrooms at least one more time. I liked it. In fact, the more I think about it the more I like it. Not great by any stretch of the imagination, but interesting, engaging and satisfying in a way that only a true Horror Freak (such as myself perhaps) can appreciate. Consider checking this one out folks… Oh, and whatever you do, if you find yourself in the Irish wilderness and come across a mushroom with a black nipple on the top, do NOT eat it. Nuff said.
