The movie has to be from the '80s or early '90s where a boy moves into a town with his family and it seems weird there. When he's leaving in his car he notices the town's name in his rear view mirror spells something like "monsters" or "evil".

What is this movie?

Could be...'Troll 2' (1990)

A movie about a family that moves to the strange town of Nilbog whose residents are real1y trolls. The trolls transform humans into vegetation which is their food source. The family's young son figures this out but no one will believe him. He then takes it upon himself to save his family from the creatures. The word the boy sees in the car's mirror is 'Goblin' which is Nilbog spelled backwards. This is the only movie I can think of where a boy reads a sign backward from a mirror in a car.
