Sinners takes us through a day in the life of a hooker trying to get her life together. She used to work for a mean and tough madam, but she's broken free. Good thing too, because it appears that everyone classified as a "sinner", especially those connected to the "miss badass" madam, are gonna get dead at the hand of a blonde woman in a silver mask.
This film starts out with much promise, showing the "promotional video" of a lovely young woman who is available for a premium nightly rate. Titillating for sure, this opening scene could have set the tone for a provocative and creepy romp through hookerville, with special emphasis on those who murder them in frightening ways. Alas, it did not.
There are a few moments that show tremendous promise, even beyond the opening scene. Whenever a young woman is about to be punished for her sins, for example, she hears the whispered judgment quickly followed by a violent death from a silver-faced killer. These scenes are wrought with suspense and drama… then it's over. The whole film can't be about the inevitable death scene, and it's too bad. The story pretty much falls apart and becomes little more than a bunch of women yelling at each other and being "tough", going on much too long before the next death scene breaks the monotony.
Admittedly, I never quite got the point of short films, unless they are intended to hopefully bepart of an anthology or used to display a filmmaker's talents to
drum up funding for a feature. There has got to be something I'm missing here, as Sinners doesn't seem to be geared toward either goal as far as I can tell. Regardless of the purpose of a short film, though, it is particularly important that these little gems pack a whole lot of meaning and drama into a short little package. This one doesn't quite get there.
If this short serves to further the marketability and exposure of filmmaker Gary Lynch, then it will have served a purpose. If it doesn't, then it had none. You can be certain it won't end up on any retail shelves.
