I learned about the writing talent of Jeffrey
Reddick when I
saw Final
Destination for the first time. I was
really impressed with the story and looked to see what else I could
find. I was not extremely impressed with Return to the Cabin
by the Lake but I did enjoy Final Destination 2
so when this new offereing was released I could not help but
watch it.
Tamara introduces us to Tamara Riley, a teenage girl
with many, many problems. First, she does not make herself look very
attractive by the clothes that she wears. She is a loner who is trying
to get through life. Second, she lives with her alcoholic father who
just can’t help himself. Third, she has a crush on her High
School English teacher. She also is delving into the art of
witchcraft. She tries to cast a spell that will bind her to her teacher
but cannot go through with the spilling of her own blood to finish the
ritual.
She writes
a piece that gets placed in the school paper that brings the use
of performance enhancing drugs to the fore front - and some students
are P.O.’ed about it. Shawn (Brian Clark), Patrick (Gil
Hacohen) and Kisha
(Melissa Elias) devise a plan to get her back. This plan however
ends up causing her death when a fight ensues and the young
witch’s blood gets spilled which unknowingly
finalizes the spell from earlier. The plan goes further a rye when they
decide to bury their victim without letting any one know what has
happened.
They are really surprised when she shows up for school the next day
and they find out that she does not believe in letting bygones be
bygones.
Though this flick has many cliché moments
and you can easily tell what is going to happen next I cannot help but
to like it. It has great pacing with a good mix of suspense and gore.
The acting isn’t that bad, with a few exceptions. The
directing stays consistent. And Riddick shows himself to be a fairly
decent horror writer.
Yes, I
know, the story is reminiscent of I Know What You Did Last
Summer. But this one is more like Carrie
on steroids. Our villain died first though, and her witchcraft spell
brought her
back from the dead. Hey, wait a minute, that makes her one of the
hottest members of the “undead” that I have ever
seen.
Anyway, go out and find a copy of Tamara, get the
friends together and enjoy because it is a fun movie to watch for all
levels of horror freak, novice to aficionado.
