The Second Season of the Masters of Horror series on Showtime combines top horror writers and directors together for a second year creating some incredible (and some not so incredible) one-hour features. The Black Cat, the eleventh episode of season 2 is a classic tale of paranoia with some new twists.

Original
air date: January 19, 2007
Directed by: Stuart Gordon
Written by: Stuart Gordon & Dennis Paoli
Short story by: Edgar Allan Poe
Starring:
Jeffrey Combs as Edgar Allan Poe
Elyse Levesque as Virginia Poe
Synopsis: In the tale of The
Black Cat Edgar A. Poe (Jeffrey Combs) is a writing slump
which means that he is also in a finance slump. His wife Virginia
(Elyse Levesque) has come down with the White Plague and has grown
deathly ill. All of the stress that the circumstances of his life have
created is then topped off with the fact that Mr. Poe is an alcoholic.
While trying to write a story for a local publication, he becomes
increasingly obsessed with the annoyances of the family cat. What
follows is a story of murder, intrigue, and insanity that reaches a
crescendo of mass proportion.
Thoughts: Wonderful, fantastic, marvelous and all of the other civilized words of adornment should be applied when describing The Black Cat. Stuart Gordon proves that he can translate more than just Lovecraft to film. He takes a classic gothic horror story and, in adaptation, allows the author himself to become the antagonist. Speaking of the author, Jeffrey Combs is no less than perfect in the role of Edgar A. Poe in The Black Cat. From the look to the constant paranoia, he becomes Poe in every sense of the word. Absolutely magnificent; so far, The Black Cat is my favorite episode of season 2. Questions or comments about The Black Cat? Contact us!
