The Dead Matter from Midnight Syndicate is a Gory Good Time

While attending Scarefest in Lexington, KY I passed the Midnight Syndicate booth and noticed they were screening The Dead Matter. The movie poster looked interesting so I decided to check it out and I’m glad I did. I also had a chance to chat it up with Edward Douglas the director of the movie whom provided Best-Horror-Movies.com the exclusive photos used in this review. You might know Midnight Syndicate for their Halloween music and most likely have heard it while attending your favorite haunted attraction. After watching this film I’m sure we will start seeing more horror movies from Midnight Syndicate.
The story surrounds Gretchen (Sean Serino) who, consumed with guilt for causing her brother’s death, wants to bring him back to life. Well, it’s Gretchen’s lucky day as she finds a magical ancient amulet that has powers to bring back the dead, and tries to use the amulet to bring back her brother. Unfortunately she brings to life a zombie friend instead. In the meantime two reviling vampires desire the evil powers of the amulet. Throw in a vampire hunter who wants destroy the amulet and you have one hell of a fun movie.
The Dead Matter has, as many films do, good and bad elements. On the down side parts of the film seem a bit convoluted and confusing at times. Some of the confusing parts do end up adding to the twists and turns in the plot, but there were several head-scratching moments along the way that detracted a bit from the positive points of mixing things up. Also the CGI effects, while not completely overdone, did get a bit cheesy at times.
On the plus side The Dead Matter moves right along with stellar performances by actors Andrew Divoff (as Vellich) and Tom Savini (as�Sebed ) and the character development was actually good – a “detail” that is often neglected in horror these days.
One of the most interesting and fun things about this one is how it mixes things up by featuring both old school style vampires and zombies. Off the top of my head I can’t remember ever seeing this delightful combination. Although this is a low budget Indie flick, the great video quality was a nice surprise, and the sound effects and musical score are as outstanding as one would expect from Midnight Syndicate
I enjoyed the humor in the film and caught myself laughing out loud several times. I especially liked how with the power of the amulet we get to see a zombie drinking beer and licking an ice cream cone. My favorite quote from the movie is when Jill questions ‘Zombies?’ and Frank replies: ‘Actually, I think they prefer the term Post-Mortem Americans’. Watching a horror a movie should be fun and The Dead Matter absolutely delivers.
If you enjoy campy horror you should definitely check this film out. The Dead Matter offers a good deal of humor, a good splattering of gore, and is definitely a movie to break the novice in your group into Indie Horror. In fact, the more I think about this movie the more I want to watch it again and will certainly be adding it to my horror movie collection. Questions or comments about The Dead Matter?
