The Eye (Gin Gwai) is
Part of the Rush of Great Horror from Asia.
In the Asian horror movie The Eye (Gin
Gwai) the dark images, interesting story and scary ghosts
make up for
the subtitles.

I have to admit, some of the best, scariest and most
effective horror movies over the last several years are coming from
Asia. The Ring, The Grudge and Pulse
are recent examples of Asian-originated horror finding much success
with American audiences.
The Asian horror movies that I like the most are the
“ghost story” movies. The best Asian ghost story
horror I have seen so far is The Eye.
The Eye starts strong and never lets up. It
revolves around Mun, a blind girl who gets a chance to finally see the
world by getting an eye transplant. The surgery goes well, and after
the surgery she slowly begins to gain sight - but something is wrong.
She begins to see shadows and figures that other people around her
cannot see.
Soon her situation takes a turn for the worse and she starts
seeing ghosts everywhere she goes, and some of them have violent
intentions…The scenes in the elevator and in the calligraphy
room are very frightening and make me jump every time I watch The
Eye.
Mun and her doctor begin doing research into the original
“owner” of the transplanted eye. They track the
donor’s history and find her former home in Thailand, where
they go to find out more about the source of the eye. To their
surprise, they find that she was a witch who could foresee the future.
The woman was shunned by her local village, and was blamed for
a massive fire that killed many, so she hung herself. Now, Mun
realizes, she has the same foresight as the eye’s former
owner and can herself see the next big disaster before it happens. But
will it be too late?
The Eye is a
highly effective and well made
horror/mystery/thriller all in one great movie. The acting is great and
the story and themes are excellent. There are a few huge scares in The
Eye, but the movie has a lot of heart as well.
The Eye is subtitled, and for me reading
the subtitles actually seemed to bring me deeper into the movie than an
English-language movie would. All in all, The Eye
is one Asian horror movie that I definitely recommend to all. Questions
