The Final Destination... promise?

The Final Destination
is hands down the worst of the trilogy of remakes of what was a somewhat entertaining film in 2000. After all, without any semblance of a script or characters, how many new and creative ways can one come up with to kill off a film’s victims? Surprisingly, quite a few, although even when coupled with the new 3D gimmick, The Final Destination is simply boresville.

Is there anything unique about The Final Destination? Well, in addition to the 3D element, The Final Destination unlike Final Destination and the sequels, has definite redneck flair. From the opening car racing sequence complete with beer guzzling spectators, to a hell bent racist tow truck driver, to a nail gun gone awry at a construction site, the film appeals to our contempt for American white trash and I suppose our amusement at seeing them in angst. But that’s about it. Not unique is the lack of depth of any of the characters, lack of a story, death, death, death and more laborious death. Ho hum.

The Final Destination (2009) Visions of Pending Doom

So the story begins…enter our main character, Nick, who has been cursed blessed with a talent for foreseeing the future. Unfortunately that future involves nothing but horrific accidents that result in the death of his close friends and thousands of strangers. So as any normal young adult would do, Nick tries to warn everyone about events to come. But do they listen? No. And by no I mean annoyingly, unrealistically no. Even when they’ve personally witnessed the wrath of Nick’s visions coming true, most of his friends remain stubbornly set in their denial which results in of course…their death.

The Final Destination (2009) Carwash Drowning

The exception to this is Nick’s girlfriend, Lori who quickly gets behind her boyfriend’s determination to alter the future. But can they alter it? Let me point out here that we simply couldn’t care less. In fact most of the characters are such jerks we actually look forward to their demise. Plus the novelty of the ‘running from fate’ theme is completely worn off by this, the forth version of Final Destination. And if you came for the 3D, yes there are one or two anticipated jolts as tools and such fly at you but this does not a movie make.

The Final Destination (2009) Death in the Mall

And not to be picky, but how many structural problems and safety issues can one town possibly have? Where is OSHA?

So our detachment from the film continues as we glance at our watches, glance back at the screen…and eventually jump to our feet when it’s over. No wonder there were no press screenings for this film. We can only hope it is indeed The Final Destination.
