Masters of Horror Season 2, Episode 7:
The Screwfly Solution

The Second Season of the Masters of Horror series on Showtime combines top horror writers and directors together for a second year creating some incredible (and some not so incredible) one-hour features. The Screwfly Solution takes violence against women to a horrifying extreme.

Masters of Horror Season 2 Episode 7: The Screwfly Solution
Original air date: December 8, 2006
Directed by: Joe Dante
Written by: Sam Hamm
Short story by: James Tiptree Jr.

Starring:
Jason Priestley
as Alan
Elliott Gould as Barney
Kerry Norton as Anne
Brenna O’Brian as Amy

Synopsis: A funny thing is happening in Florida. It seems that the men are killing the women for no other reason but that they are women. Two scientists, Alan (Jason Priestley) and Barney (Elliott Gould), are called in to find out why, because it seems that the killings are not just happening in Florida. As a matter of fact, women are being attacked and murdered all over the world. The reason revealed in The Screwfly Solution could actually be more disturbing than the act itself.

Thoughts: Let me begin by saying that I am not a Joe Dante fan. After The Howling and Gremlins, his resume isn’t the most spectacular. Dante was also the director that brought us the infamous “negligent use of zombies” MOH episode Homecoming. However, that did not mean that I was not going to watch The Screwfly Solution. I am just not that type of person. I sat through it, and I sat through it again, and after sitting through it for the third time I had an epiphany: I just don’t like Joe Dante. I apologize to any Dante fans that are reading this, but I see no redeeming quality in his work. From watching Homecoming and The Screwfly Solution I have learned that Dante is anti-current administration (can’t really blame him there) and anti-Christian, other than that any other director could have done as good if not better with the scripts he was handed. Am I picky? Yeah, about my horror I am. Am I anal? People have accused me of that. Do I mean to offend? No, but you’ll get over it. Questions or comments about The Screwfly Solution?  Contact us!
