The Unborn Effectively Unleashes a New Breed of Predator

The Unborn takes a young, often scantily-clad girl full of resolve and matches her with a restless demon from the depths of hell. Bringing a new element to a not-so-new theme, this particular predator once shared a womb with our heroin.

In The Unborn Writer-Director David S. Goyer manages to unfold a disturbing yarn in such away that we overlook some of the humorous clichés – the “monster in the medicine cabinet,” heads rotating - and instead focus on its chilling suspense and the ominous truth that “Jumby wants to be born.” The Unborn builds tension and scares the bejesus out of us in a PG-13 way, rather than relying on gore and carnage, which makes it a welcome change from the standard horror flick. And the introduction of a Holocaust element makes the story even more unsettling.

Curiously following a young boy that appears out of no where, Casey is led to find something horrific buried in the woods. After this she begins to see the boy all over the neighborhood and let’s just say he’s not the neighborly type. Freakish visions start to appear around her, Casey’s eyes suddenly change color, and she wonders if this all may have something to do with her mother’s suicide years before.

In a desperate attempt to find the secret behind the strange appearances and mysterious deaths of those around her, Casey starts digging through her mother’s belongings which leads her to a retirement home nearby. Her newfound grandmother, a holocaust survivor there, reluctantly admitsThe Unborn (2009) Oldman and Yustman during Exorcism Casey had an unborn twin that must have taken on the identity of a malicious possessing spirit in limbo trying to find a doorway back into theworld. Apparently her parents forgot to mention to Casey that she had an unborn twin, or more oddly that she had a living grandmother.

Unleashed from the inhumane treatment of the Nazis in Auschwitz, the demon first haunted Casey’s grandmother, then her mother and he’s now trying to wreak havoc on the world through her. Lucky for the world, Casey is a fighter and decides to kick some ghostly ass.

Through the assistance of Kabbalah and one very helpful Rabbi (well-played by Gary Oldman), Casey decides she needs to undergo a modern day exorcism where ten volunteers surround the subject in a circle. Apparently these are ten people that didn’t see The Exorcist.

Does the exorcism rid the world of The Unborn? Let’s just say if Casey’s smart enough to figure out how to exorcise a demon from her body, she doesn’t make things any easier with the amazingly stupid mistakes we find out about right after that.
