The Second Season
of the Masters of
Horror series on Showtime combines top horror writers and
directors together for a second year creating some incredible (and some
not so incredible) one-hour features. The V Word is
the first vampire film in a while that is not also an action film. The
special effects save the day.

Original
air date: November 10, 2006 Directed by: Ernest R. Dickerson Written by: Mike Garris
Starring:
Arjay Smith as Kerry Branden Nadon as Justin Michael Ironside as Mr. Chaney
Synopsis: When two teenage best friends
get bored Justin (Branden Nadon) suggests to Kerry (Arjay Smith) that
they should go to the local funeral home to see a dead body.
Justin’s cousin works nights there and one of their
classmates, who died in a car crash, is still there. Unbeknownst to
them, however, Justin’s cousin is not the only one who works
the night shift at this funeral home.
Thoughts: Personally, I try to stay away from
reviews before I watch a film because I do not wish to begin with a
biased viewpoint. The V Word is a perfect example
of this. I did not get a chance to view this on its air date. As a
matter of fact, I didn’t get to see The V Word
until the Masters of Horror season 2 was over. I had heard everyone say
that it was the worst episode, it was a pathetic attempt at horror,
etc. Because of this, I found myself not wanting to watch it. When I
did though, I was surprised.
Is The V Word
the best? No, but it wasn’t as bad as people made it out to
be. It’s a vampire story and in Hollywood’s
depiction of vampires these days it is kind of sobering to see one in a
horror film rather than an action film. One of the redeeming qualities
of The V Word is the Special FX work by Gregory
Nicotero. You can find his work in The People under the Stairs,
In
The Mouth of Madness, Land
of the Dead and other good horror films. His work
here is top notch. Do me a favor though; don’t take my word
for it. Watch The V Word for yourself and take it
for what it is; a one hour vampire film that is meant to be
entertaining - and in that I would say that it succeeded.
