Vacancy Just Might Convert some Newbies into Horror Freaks.
Vacancy starts with a very basic plot and grows to a nail-biting scream-out-loud rush of adrenaline and fright. In this review by a newbie to horror, read how one former scardy-cat became a horror convert.

April 20th - A day that will live in infamy - The Columbine massacre, the day that Hitler killed himself, Earth day...What better day to venture out into the crisp night air to catch a cool horror flick movie premiere featuring two of Hollywood's darlings. Vacancy, featuring Luke Wilson (David) and Kate Beckinsale (Amy) rocked the house.
Vacancy has everything that any good horror flick needs to succeed; deserted roads, night skies, broken cars, an absence of cell phone towers, unsuspecting young lovers (sort of) and skinny guys with bad 80's hair cuts (Frank Whaley) ... Vacancy is destined to be a horror hit.
From the first rhythmic thud on the motel room door to the finality of the skinny 80's guy lying dead on the floor, Vacancy kept me on the edge of my seat. This one is a genuine screamer.
The plot is basic, but also believable. Long road trip - accident up ahead - take a short cut - car trouble...then real trouble. I mean the kind of trouble that involves knife wielding, voyeuristic video maniacs. That is the basic design of Vacancy.
Oh and the expletives. Who could forget the expletives? "Oh @#*!! the car broke down"... "The hotel room in that video looks awfully *@#!! familiar", "Oh #!@*# I'm a cop and I'm gonna die", "@*$#!@ this video killing spree is not going as well as I had hoped".
The hero of the movie is David. He goes from being an irritating, bitched out sort of half-man to a genuine hero who saves the day. Well - at least he tries to save the day. His wife wakes up a bit in the end, so I guess Vacancy has a hero and a heroine.
As a woman and a bonafide scaredy-cat I was biting my fingers, screaming out loud and gripping the leg of the person in the seat next to me during most of the film. When Amy started fighting back I started to sit up straighter in my seat and found myself yelling "Go Amy, kick him where it hurts!...get him...shoot him!" I'm sure those around me in the theater loved it.
In short - I loved it.
At the conclusion of the film I was pondering about the wonderful world of adrenaline, serotonin and whatever the heck else is going on in the body and brain that made me say "More! I Want More! Somebody - Please Scare Me Some More!" Thanks to this horror movie I have found a new drug. I have got to let Huey Lewis know about this one. Questions or comments about Vacancy? contact us!
