Villagers Find Man With Upper Torso Only Writing on Ground

Can anyone name this 80's horror flick? Two scenes really stand out to me.

1. During a flashback (I think the flashback was to give the weird history on a local castle or something) these villagers find an abomination washed up on the shore from a river. It is only half of a man, missing it's lower half, and it writhes on the ground, ribs and other parts showing.

2. Later in the movie (or possibly earlier), a group of people who have breached the castle, house, or wherever they are not supposed to be, are underground/under the castle maneuvering around these pits that have other creations in them. They have torches in hand, and it's very obvious that falling in would mean death for them.

Thanks very much for any help you can provide. I have searched for this film off and on for several years now.
