We Are the Night is a Sexy and Slick Tale of the Last Remaining Vampires
| Tweet | |
The We Are the Night vampires are all female with a hunger beyond blood. This film takes 'girl power' to a whole new level, and somebody's gonna get burned.

Louise (Nina Hoss), Charlotte (Jennifer Ulrich) and Nora (Anna Fischer) are vampires, some of the last remaining of their kind. All of the "living" vampires are women these days as the men either got careless and were killed by humans, or got too annoying and were killed by the women. Louise is the ring leader of this group of three, and she is on a quest to find her perfect soul mate - the woman she can turn into a vampire and live with happily ever after. One day Louise spots Lena (Karoline Herfurth) and it is love at first sight.
Louise sees "keeper" material in Lena's eyes, which is good because there isn't much to look at otherwise. Lena comes from the wrong side of the tracks and makes her living pick pocketing strangers and evading the
police. All that is going to change now that Lena's been bitten. 24 hours of hell as her body dies and a dunk in a bathtub and what emerges from the water is the beautiful woman Lena was inside. What's going to happen in the unfortunate event that Lena doesn't want to be the lesbian vampire lover belonging to Louise for all eternity?
We Are the Night is slick, I mean really slick. Everything from cinematography and music to the drop-dead gorgeous appearance of the female night walkers spells T-shirts and sponsorship of the new toy in the Happy Meal. The effects and gore are fantastic as well, and by the looks of it the filmmakers spared no expense. The performances of all of the leading ladies as well as the mortal suitor of Lena (Tom played by Max Rienmelt) are very good; kind of James Bond meets Twilight. We Are the Night plays a bit like a teen sensation movie, but definitely for adults.

The plot is very interesting with the girl-power element; vampirism is only for the women because the men are big ole oafs. There are a few things about the storyline that don't add up, and most of them can be ignored via the horror freak ability to suspend disbelief, but some of them make so little sense that the presentation feels a bit "fluffy", surface stuff. For example, it is very clear that Louise is only interested in girl-on-girl action, but that doesn't seem to be the case for the other lady vampires. So why do they stick around the estrogen crew when what they really want is a randy construction worker? They are all
extremely nonchalant about their feeding frenzies as well, leaving bodies laying around and walking through subway stations with blood all over their sexy dresses. When things begin going wrong for this crew it's difficult to understand why it took so damn long. They have no room for subtlety.
These vampires are quite the party girls as well; pleased that they can do any drugs they want, or whatever else tickles their fancy, and not have to pay for it with declining health or a tired look… they are always immaculate. In the end, vampire or human, love conquers all though, just as it should be.
We Are the Night is very entertaining and fun to watch. The slick look and feel combined with great performances by a very attractive cast more than makes up for the subtitles to be endured in this German eye-candy feast. Regarding "serious", scary horror though, We Are the Night does not fit the bill. Not quite as stunning as Underworld and shy of the "tweeniness" of Twilight, this film still falls within a similar realm and will likely earn the ire of the hard core among us.

We Are the Night is fun and engaging vampire entertainment that happens to have great gore too. Go into this one with your expectations in check and you won't be disappointed.
