Wound is Crazy, Bizarre, and Indescribable

Wound might be the weirdest movie I’ve ever seen. It’s not clear exactly what happens, but it is certainly is over our heads. Definitely an ‘experience’.

Susan (Kate O’Rourke) is a meek woman, undergoing psychological evaluations. She seems to have an extremely dark past including possible sexual abuse from her father, a failed pregnancy, and dabbling in S&M. Meanwhile, Tanya (Te Kaea Beri), is searching for her missing mother in the same sort of S&M fetish world. Susan begins seeing Tanya everywhere, slowly descending into madness. Is Tanya alive, dead, or some mix of the two from Susan’s own head?
Sometimes, when I’m reviewing a screener, I like to “livetweet” my thoughts on Twitter. It helps me keep my thoughts in order, and it is sometimes quite entertaining. While watching Wound, a film from New Zealand, it was different. I tweeted this one because it’s the kind of film where writing out one’s thoughts while watching distracts from the weirdness of what you’re seeing. Here’s a few samples:
“Now I'm watching (Wound)... and I can't describe what I'm seeing. Men would be crossing their legs and wincing is all I'll say.”
“15 min into (Wound), I'm stopping. I'm too tired, and the movie's too weird. I'm starting to wonder if there's a fetish this film won't do.”
“And now, back to the movie! Let's see what other sexual fetishes I'm subjected to.”
“No, (Wound)... stop it... I can see where you're going... I don't want to see this fetish.”
“When you're done being disgusting, (Wound), I do kinda wanna know what's going on at some point.”
“You know, when most movies break taboos... THERE'S A SENSIBLE PLOT.”
“Almost an hour in. I am so totally lost.”
And my personal favorite:
“*jaw drops* OH YEAH, BECAUSE THAT SHOT WAS SO NECESSARY, (Wound)!” (You don’t want to know what I’d just seen.)

You may think I’m kidding or that I’m being prudish. Here is an incomplete list of every fetish and/or sexual depravity I picked out of this movie while trying to actually figure out what was happening: Sado-masochism, forced prevention of urination, genital mutilation, rape, partial mummification, mild bloodplay, master and slave, and incest. And trust me, you don’t want to know how the “pregnancy” scene ends. This would actually be okay, though, if ANYTHING made sense! As it is, the movie jumps around so much it’s very hard to figure out what’s going on. We begin with the incest implication and genital mutilation. We cut to Susan in her daily life, then it’s her master-slave relationship with Master John (Campbell Cooley). Then we’re introduced to Tanya completely out of nowhere, and so forth. It’s almost like “stream of consciousness” filmmaking except so far off the deep end, so surreal, and with such sudden jumps to the next scenes that it never makes sense.
There
are, admittedly, a few good things about Wound. Kate
O’Rourke plays “Susan” well, putting a fair amount of humanity into a
character who is clearly either already insane or progressively being
driven there. Also, this movie cannot be rated as badly as some others
because it is filmed perfectly and has perfectly synced audio. It also
has a series of very interesting, dreamlike camera movements, in
keeping with the surreal, nonsensical style of the film itself. I may
have been many things during this film, but “bored” wasn’t one of them.
The overall thought throughout the film is “why”. Apparently Wound is developing some sort of clout. It’s already gotten its own fair share of controversy for various reasons. It is entirely possible that this one just went over my head, and, in a way, I invite you to see if you can make more sense out of it. From my perspective, though, it’s not a horror movie: it’s just a series of shocks and fetish imagery that don’t seem to gel into a fully coherent story or understandable plot.
