Haunted Attraction Review: Zombie Apocalypse Atlanta

Zombie Apocalypse Atlanta is the most amazing haunted attraction I’ve ever been to, and I’ve done a ton of them. Not an ordinary haunted house, this is the closest thing to being in a zombie film that I can imagine.

Zombie Apocalypse Atlanta is the most amazing haunted attraction I’ve ever been to, and I’ve done a ton of them. Just about all haunted houses and such are fun, but at some level the different attractions are all trying to do essentially the same things in different and scary ways. The basic formula for most haunted houses starts with some kind of back-story or overall theme, say, radioactive mutants take over Petunia’s daycare facility (or something). Then groups of folks head out into darkened corridors made of plywood that occasionally open up into larger rooms with scary scenes of, say, bloody babies being prepared for dinner by the evil and radioactive Petunia. The primary scene does something to grab your attention so Petunia’s evil helper can jump out of a dark corner behind you and scare
the crap out of you. Then, off you go toward the next scene. Each different haunted attraction strives to have better set-up, better scenes, scarier helpers to jump out at you, grosser spiders hanging from the ceiling, etc. I love them all, don’t get me wrong, but they are very similar in general concept, most of them.
Zombie Apocalypse Atlanta is a completely different concept, new to the Atlanta haunt scene in 2010. Not actually a haunted house, this is more like “Immersion Theater”… and the ride begins from the second you get in the queue line awaiting entry as random people are singled out as possibly being infected by whatever zombie agent exists (virus, chemical, etc.) and are dragged screaming out of line and behind a big wall, where they are shot. Welcome to the last safe haven left in the global zombie apocalypse.
The trek begins as an orientation to the safe haven but ends with a quest to survive when the space is infiltrated by the walking dead. Led by a small band of military commandos the “survivors” are whisked from hospital corridors to diners, and even outside where the seedy underworld of zombie trafficking and prostitution is thriving. There are motorcycles, hookers, car crashes, machine guns, infected homeless, holy cow! It’s just friggin awesome.

Zombie Apocalypse Atlanta is the closest thing to surviving in a zombie horror movie that I can imagine. Either that or truly being inside some zombie shoot-um-up video game – this is one hell of a ride. It’s pretty amazing how well done this is, really, and the feeling of panic that comes up when a small horde of zombies comes at you from all sides is 100% real… take it from me. One of the secrets to the success of this show is that it was created from the point of view of a filmmaker rather than a haunt builder, with the intention being to create an entire story that visitors experience from beginning to end. It’s one thing to dodge random zombies and monsters, and yet another to be living an end-of-the-world scenario that unfolds and develops… while you’re dodging zombies and monsters.
There is a separate section where you can shoot rubber BBs at zombies as they dart between obstructions in an open field. This is EXACTLY like the bonus round in a zombie shooter game and the zombies get closer and closer to the shooting platform while you try your darndest to get a head shot in. If one of them gets to the closest cover to the platform he proceeds to toss body parts and such in the air to provide distraction for the other zombies; a nice end to a really fantastic show.
