Zombie Master,

Not a question but a statement:

Being an avid collector of all things zombie(movies, books, action figures, clocks, T-shirts, artwork, the list goes on and on) it fills my heart with joy to know that there are others out there that love these nasty little flesh eaters as much as I do. Whether it be the cheesy like "Butt-crack” or “Garden of the dead" or the classics like "Return of the Living dead” or “The Dead Next Door" this is a genre worth exploring!

Jason from Ramsey

Jason,

Not an answer but a comment:

The rarity of finding someone who even knows that there is a zombie movie out there entitled Buttcrack gives me the warm fuzzies. The more people that I find that has the same passion, some call it obsession, that I have for the zombie the less "sick and twisted" we all become. Thanks for bringing us all a little closer to the "norm". Next stop, world domination.

Good hunting and aim high,

The Zombie Master

Dear Master,

I have always wanted to know if a zombie can drown. You’re at a pool during a zombie outbreak and one falls in the deep end. What happens, does it stay at the bottom? Or if is floats what happens?

And one more question, if you put a plastic bag over a zombies head, like you were trying to suffocate a human, what would happen? Do zombies need air to live on?

I’m dying to know!

Brandan Yost, Alberta

Brandan,

I am beginning to sense that there are a lot of people out there who are new to the zombie genre and are starving for information. It kind of gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.

Anyway, to answer your question, they cannot drown and they are actually pretty good at walking under water.

May I recommend both Land of the Dead and Zombie Lake for further study.

This does, by proxy, answer your second question.

Good hunting and aim high,

The Zombie Master

Hi there,

To your knowledge has their been a zombie movie made in Africa? Preferably south or southern Africa. I was thinking about Zulu Zombies or the ilk - any such movie made?

Thanks,

Ross
Cape Town, South Africa

Ross,

Being that the zombie legend traces its roots back to Africa, you would think that more zombie movies would be based there but alas it is not so. There is one out there that comes to mind but I must warn you, mainly to shift responsibility of any adverse effects after viewing from my lap to yours, it is not that good.

Black Voodoo Exorcist is a Spanish movie, filmed mainly in the Dominican Republic and Haiti, about an African prince who is cursed and buried alive only to be excavated centuries later by explorers. It is more of a "Mummy" rip-off than a true zombie film.

I will look in my vast collection of obscure zombie cinema and see if I can come up with any others (perhaps that aren't as painful to watch) and let you know. In the mean time, I hope this helps and as always...

Good hunting and aim high,

The Zombie Master

Dear Zombie Master,

Can zombies see? If not, how do they manage to find prey?

(I became) curious after realizing that all these "back from the dead" types are still able…to use a function most humans start to lose before they are six feet under.

Thanks,

Lindsay, Allston, MA

Lindsay,

That is a great question for someone just beginning to explore the intricacies of zombie physiology. I smell fresh meat. Mmmmmmmm

If we were to utilize logic (there's that darned L word again) to answer this question we would have to look at the state of the eyes, and there usefulness, upon death.

A zombie functions on the most primal instincts in the brain with minimal thought process beyond satisfying a hunger. That said, if the eyes were in good shape upon death then the brains electronic pulses would continue to receive signals from the eyes, and they would function at a rudimentary level.

In other words, the zombie would have the same vision after death that the person had before death.

I hope this helps and if you find yourself stumped on anything else don't be afraid to ask. I don't bite to hard.

Good hunting and aim high,

The Zombie Master

Hola master Z,

I only have a simple query for ye...if you could be a zombie, what kind of zombie would you be?

One resulting from a voodoo ritual perhaps? ;)

-Kathleen, Baton Rough, LA

Kathleen,

I have actually pondered this very question from time to time and I always come back to the same answer.

I would love to be like Bub from Day of the Dead. Think about it. I could listen to a Walkman, read Stephen King, use a firearm, and salute with the best of them. And free food to boot.

Now that is the American dream if I ever heard it.

Good hunting and aim high,
The Zombie Master

Hi Master!

Gosh, I'm so excited about (the) upcoming movie The Day of the Dead. I saw the trailer and Mena Suvari (is) a pretty good start. She is HOT.

Well, the point is Master, what do you think, and specifically what do you EXPECT, from this (remake of a film by) the Grand Master George A. Romero? Steve Miner is in charge of the direction, so this could be another horror gem. We, the Zombie-Apprentices, are waiting for your thoughts!

Mike, Orange County CA

Mike,

I have actually been kind of hesitant to give my views on the upcoming remake of Day of the Dead and there are two reasons for that.

1) I am not a really big fan of remakes because you never know until you see them if they can live up to the original and

2) I saw the awful trailer and was praying that it was a joke.

I do however owe it to the "zombie-apprentices" to give my opinion of what has transpired so far. So here ya go.

"AAAARRRRRGGGGHHH!!!!!!!!!"

Having to go by the trailer and interviews only Day of the Dead 2007 has absolutely nothing to do with the original Romero masterpiece. As a matter of fact, if you go by the trailer alone, it appears to be more along the lines of 28 Days Later (virus contracted by bite without death being necessary) than any thing else. I sincerely hope I am wrong because I have great respect for both Steve Miner and Jeffrey Reddick but if this is what is coming out "to a theater near me" then change the name, change the names of the characters, get rid of any link to the original and it may be a decent film. Otherwise I feel it will go the way of Halloween III.

They are still hoping for a 2007 release so we will have to wait and see.

You can see the trailer here:

Good hunting and aim high,

The Zombie Master

Zombie Master,

Have you ever heard of a revised script of Shakespeare's Hamlet (that was turned) into a zombie-based show? It's a long shot, but do you know where I could find it?

Much appreciated.

Joseph, Eugene OR

Joseph,

However cool the idea is, you may be thinking about a trailer that was released in early 2005 about a zombie musical (yes musical) titled Z A Zombie Musical written, produced and directed by Austin, TX based independent filmmaker John McLean. It has finally reached the post-production and hope for a late Fall release.

You can see the trailer here and check out the info on the site.

As always,
Good hunting and aim high,

The Zombie Master

Master:

Hi, first, I want to congratulate the whole staff of BHM, great job guys!

Ok, here’s my question:
A few years ago, when I was living in Mexico, I saw one Friday the 13th movie, I think it is called "Jason Dies" or” the death of Jason" (according to the Spanish title), well, it’s the one with the Freddy K. Glove at the end of the movie appearing from the dirt(sand?) My point is: at the very beginning of the movie, when Jason’s corpse is in the morgue, a big ugly worm-like thing escape from his body, and "TAKES" other bodies during the film. Is this considered zombification? Jason himself is a Zombie, isn’t he? Or is just a demonic possession?

Keep up the excellent work, and count on me as a true Horror fan, and maybe, one day, a Horror Master!

BRRAAIINSSSSSS!!

Miguel, Anaheim CA

P.S. Any suggestion for a comedy-type zombie movie? I mean, I don’t think ANYTHING can beat Shaun of the Dead, but I’ll accept your wise advice.

Miguel, Anaheim CA

Miguel,

Thanks for the encouraging words and I think I speak for everyone when I say that we are enjoying ourselves with this outlet to share our passion for horror films with other like minded individuals.

To your first question:
After Friday the 13th Part VIII - Jason Takes Manhattan, Paramount sold the rights to Jason to New Line Cinema. The movie that followed was titled Jason Goes to Hell and was actually to be the end of the series with a possibility of a meeting with Freddy lingering on the back burner.

Jason actually died in Part IV. He was not in Part V. At the beginning of Part VI, Tommy Jarvis decided to go to the graveyard and dig up Jason to make sure he was dead. Of course Jason was in the grave and Tommy took a metal shaft and shoved it in the chest of the corpse during a thunder storm. Lightening hit the metal shaft, awakened Jason from the dead and from that point on Jason Voorhees was a super human zombie.

Jason Goes to Hell took a different turn by making the cause of Jason a pure evil spirit that can move from one person to the other. I personally did not like this episode and feel that it should be left out of the series for lack of continuity. That being said, you could "technically" put Jason in the "Zombus Demonicus" category but only for this one movie. Jason X goes back to the Jason that we all know and love.

Second question:
You are correct in your assumption that, to date, nothing can beat Shaun of the Dead for the zombie-comedy genre of film. Others of note would be Return of the Living Dead and Return of the Living Dead 2 and for a different approach, check out the Asian import Bio Zombie.

Good hunting and aim high,
The Zombie Master

Dead Zombie Master,

I read in one of the question/answers above that you don't consider 28 Days Later a zombie movie. Is this because the people are not dead to begin with? Would Dead Alive not be considered a zombie movie for the same reason?

Dana, Ansonia CT, USA

Dana,

A good short question deserves a good short answer. In 28 Days Later the rage virus takes instant affect and the "not-a-zombie" zombies eventually die, if left alone, by starvation. In Dead Alive "Mommy Dearest" dies in bed from the rat bite and then comes back; thus making it zombie movie by the definition of the word.

Aim high and go for the head,

The Zombie Master

Hi

I love zombie movies and I have seen a lot of them but almost all of them are based in a jungle or an island. I would love to see more (zombie movies that take place in) cities like Romero's Dawn of the Dead, Land of the Dead and Return of the Living Dead 2. I would love to know the names of all zombie movies with cities or towns.

Please help!!!

Anthony, Aguadilla P.R.

Anthony,

It is always good to meet a fellow zombie fan. I will forewarn you from the beginning: What you ask should not be taken lightly.

Although I commend you for your enthusiasm, I cannot, with good conscience, give a complete list to just anybody. You must learn to crawl, "grasshopper", before you can walk. There were many sacrifices and painful steps taken before my teacher was willing to let me out on my own as a teacher.

I will, however, give you a short list of zombie films that take place within a community that should start you on your path. If, after watching these you are still eager to continue down this path, I will consider it an honor to help expand your library.

City of the Living Dead (1983)
The Dead Next Door (1989)
Junk (Shiryo-gari) (1999)
Video Dead (1987)
Zombie Lake (1980)
Chopper Chicks in Zombietown (1989)

I hope this helps in your quest.

The Zombie Master

Dear Master,

Great work on this site, a fascinating read through all sorts of zombie knowledge.

I wondered if you wouldn't mind helping me, I'm doing an illustration project where I'm reconstructing Public Service posters from the 20th Century (WWII propaganda and public health warnings and such) that the government has issued, but from the viewpoint that conspiracy theories suggested in horror and especially zombie films were actual events of history.

In a nutshell, a series of period posters warning people of the dangers of getting bitten, spreading diseases, not declaring turned relatives to the appropriate authorities and similar.

Also, I wish to have posters giving the contradictory message that everything is fine, and the relative who acted funny and then disappeared without trace is not to be worried about.

I wondered if you knew of any zombie films I could directly reference that feature the government doing shady experiments. I'm aware of C.H.U.D and Return of the Living Dead having Government themes, and I thought Re-animator would fit as it has scientists at a highly regarded institution experimenting with corpses, but I struggle to think of more.

I wondered if you could point me in the direction of any other zombie flicks rooted in government conspiracy.

Thank you for your time,

Kev Tozer, UK

Kev,

Thanks for the kind words about the site.

Your project sounds like a lot of fun and I am honored to be involved in your research. I would also be interested in viewing the finished product.

As you know, government conspiracy is a favorite sub-plot within the zombie genre. Some that may help you in your research would be:

The Dead Next Door (1989)
Resident Evil (2002)
Horror Hospital (1973)
The Resurrection Game (2001)
Come Get Some (2003)
Stacy (2001)
Biohazardous (2000)

If you are a glutton for cinematic punishment you can also try the following: (I deny any responsibility for any mental, physical, or emotional damage that may occur from the viewing of these films.)

Zombi 3 (1988)
Virus (1980)
Day of the Dead 2 - Contagium (2005)

I hope this helps and write back if I can help with any other projects.

Good hunting and aim high,

The Zombie Master
