Zombie Town is an Unexpectedly Enjoyable 80 Minutes

Zombie Town is an Unexpectedly Enjoyable 80 Minutes of Zombie Mayhem. This film is not particularly original, but it doesn’t have to be.

Have you ever been searching through your movie collection for something to watch only to find a film that is still in the wrapping, just sitting there waiting for someone to release it from its cellophane shell and use it in the fashion that it was created to be used? Yeah I know, a little melodramatic but I could have sworn I heard a barely audible joyous scream when I found Zombie Town in the back of an already overflowing shelf and brought it into the light of day. Maybe it was just gas.

Zombie Town starts with a handful of guys at a hunting cabin waiting for a couple more guys to show up. Only one shows up however and he is not in the best shape. In fact, he doesn’t look good at all and when one of the guys goes to the door he gets his neck ripped open. What happens next can only be described as good old fashioned small town zombie mayhem.

Zombie Town (2007) Ray has looked better...

After the opening credits role, we meet Jake (Adam Hose) and his brother Denton (Phil Burke) as they try to run a garage that became theirs after their father died. The problem is that neither one of them are mechanics so the shop is not making any money. Denton receives a call to tow a truck that has been abandoned on a service road so the two brothers head out. They both know the owners and decide to go up to the hunting cabin to see what is going on before they tow the vehicle. Upon viewing the carnage Denton gets attacked and is bitten on the shoulder. He also breaks his leg in the struggle and now Jake must go into town to get help. Jake runs into an old girlfriend, Zombie Town (2007) Analyzing the zombie body looking for the causeAlex (Brynn Lucas) that is back in town working at a lab and they both go to the sheriff’s office. During this time, there are a couple of phone calls to the sheriff that must be mentioned. First, someone has jump out of the woods and bitten an old lady’s dog. Second, someone has jumped out of the woods in front of a tractor trailer rig and it has wrecked effectively shutting down the main highway into and out of the small town. How convenient.

When they find Denton, he has already become a zombie and is put in the jail for observation. He then starts to deteriorate and small slug like parasites proceed to destroy his body. It seems that these parasites are the culprit and it is up to Jake, Alex and Randy, a very sarcastic acquaintance, to put a stop to the infestation before it spreads to other small towns.

Zombie Town (2007) Looking through the hole of their handiwork

Not really expecting to, I thoroughly enjoyed Zombie Town. The opening sequence kind of worried me and it was slow to get started but it turned out to be a fun 80 minutes. You can tell that Damon Lemay (writer/director) loves zombie films and Zombie Town reflects a mixing of Romero with Night of the Creeps. It is not original but it doesn’t have to be. The character of Randy, played by Dennis Lemoine, makes the film funny with his tongue-in-cheek sarcasm and by the end of the film both Jake and Alex is playing off of him.

If you are not a fan of zombie films then you wouldn’t be buying this anyway but Zombie Town is a decent addition to a zombie library. Questions or comments about Zombie Town? Discuss it on The Ossuary Forums!
